A European funded project based within the fashion and textile industry in East London. Cutting IT is a partnership initiative designed to assist in the revitalisation of the sector. East London has long been a centre for fashion and textiles.
But in recent years, due largely to intense and growing competition from low cost imports, the sector has been in steady decline. Manufacturing output has fallen by one third during the past decade alone.
In order to survive, the sector has to adapt. This means responding creatively to new trading and market conditions. The Cutting IT project, funded by Equal, is designed to support employers and employees, by ensuring access to a skilled workforce, capable of delivering the high value, niche market products and services, to compete effectively in a global market.
ELeL is working in partnership with NCFE to develop a range of sector-specific free business development and training services, on and off line.
Courses will include computer skills, literacy, numeracy, fashion and textile business skills, and English language.
The scope of Cutting IT includes introduction of new leaner manufacturing techniques and business development initiatives to ensure businesses can adapt to new market conditions. It is also creating clear career pathways and progression routes, by bringing together training providers and industry organisations.
There are twelve partners involved in the Cutting IT project:
